9 Steps to Study in Germany for free

Germany has around 300 public universities that offer English and German programs for free. It is among the top 3 best study destinations for international students.

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through how to study for a master’s in Germany for free in just 9 easy steps. 

Step #1 Fulfill the requirements

Before you apply, make sure you meet the basic requirements for a degree in Germany:

For Bachelors:

  • A – level qualification
  • 12th year education + 2 semesters in university
  • 12th year education + Studienkollege in Germany

For Masters:

  • You need at least 16 years of education.
  • Your CGPA should be at least 2.0, but above 3.0 is better.
  • You need to have completed 180 ECTS or more in your bachelor’s degree.

Language Proficiency:

  • Language proficiency is required, depending on whether you choose an English or German-taught program.

Step #2: Choose the Right Universities

Once you’re sure you meet the requirements, the next step is to pick the right universities. This can seem tough, but here’s how to do it easily:

1. Visit the Daad website.

2. Search the intended program.

3. Apply filters to find the most relevant courses.

4. Read the “overview” and “requirements/registration” tabs carefully.

5. Explore thoroughly and find the universities that you are eligible for.

6. Make a list of selected courses and universities to keep a record.


Tip: Be specific with your filters, like choosing the language, field of study, and tuition fees, to find the best match.

Step #3: Meet the Language Requirements

You have to meet the language requirement of your selected course. Here’s what you need to know:

  • For English-taught programs, you usually need a minimum of 6.0 in IELTS.
  • For German-taught programs, you need to have at least a B2 level in German.
  • Some universities accept other tests like TOEFL or PTE, so check the requirements.

Step #4: Prepare Your Documents

After fulfilling all the requirements and shortlisting the universities, it’s time to prepare the documents to apply to German universities. The list of documents is as follows:

  • CV
  • Passport
  • Letter of Motivation
  • Certificates or experience letters
  • Letter of Recommendation (if required)
  • Attested Bachelor’s degree and transcript
  • Matric Certificate (or O Levels Grade Sheet)
  • Certificate of Intermediate (or A Levels Grade sheet)
  • IELTS certificate (or any other test certificate as per the requirements of the German university)

Note: Other documents might also be required. Carefully read the list of documents mentioned on the university’s website.

Step # 5: Apply to the universities

Now that your documents are ready, you can apply to the universities. You can apply to German universities in the following three ways:

  1. Direct apply through Uni-Assist
  2. Direct to the university admission portal
  3. Apply for VPD to Uni-Assist and then to the university

Note: Some universities require you to mail hard copies of your documents, so check their instructions.

Step #6: Wait for Your Admission Letter

You will receive the admission letter after 1 or 2 months of applying to German universities. Accept the admission letter on a priority basis. Priority should be based on:

  • Preferred course
  • Job opportunities
  • University ranking
  • Student accommodation
  • Location of the university

Step #7: Book Your Embassy Appointment

Once you have the admission letter, book an appointment with the German Embassy. The sooner, the better, to avoid any delays. 

For Islamabad Embassy:

The Islamabad embassy has introduced a new consular portal for appointments.

  • First, get your university admission
    ​
  • Next, make blocked account and complete all visa requirements
    ​
  • Then apply through the portal and join the waiting list.
    ​
  • The waiting time is around 3-4 months.

For Karachi Consulate:

  • You can book appointments directly from the website.
    ​
  • You will get a date after a few months.
    ​

Step # 8: Open a Blocked Account

After booking your visa appointment, you’ll need to open a blocked account. This account proves that you have enough money to cover your expenses while studying in Germany. Deposit the required amount (€11,904.00 for 2024) before your visa appointment. 

You can open it through a blocked account service provider like Coracle, Fintiba, Expatrio, etc.

Step #9: Get Ready for Your Visa Interview

Once you get email confirmation of your embassy appointment you need to prepare for your visa interview. The important documents you should ensure before the visa interview are as follows:

  • Passport
  • Admission letter
  • Application form
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Appointment confirmation email
  • Documented academic and professional record
  • Proof of financial means (Blocked account money i.e. € 11,904.00)
